What’s UP at White Sheet

Flying high with White Sheet Radio Flying Club

2026 sees White Sheet Radio Flying Club soar into its 51st year at one of Britain’s finest slope sites. Perched high on the rolling chalk downs of Wiltshire, White Sheet Hill offers superb lift and big skies, we’re proud to have flown here for over half a century. From the balsa-built beginnings to today’s impressive scale models, tradition and progress fly side by side. Modern composite gliders share the slope with beautifully crafted vintage designs, while fast F3F racers, elegant F5J thermal soarers, PSS, DLG, and foam favourites like the Zagi and Ahi ensure there’s a place in the sky at White Sheet Radio Flying Club for everyone.

Whether you’re taking your first steps into RC flying or you’ve been on the sticks for decades, WSRFC offers good company, shared know-how, plenty of laughter and a genuinely warm welcome.

Open Slopes Day – Sunday 24th May

Following on from a well-attended first Open Slopes event of the year in April, as reported by Open Slopes Secretary Pete, eleven of us made the trek to the North East face and were treated to a proper mix of conditions, thermals, sink, and just enough lift to keep things interesting.

If nothing else, last time proved two things: the lift comes and goes when it pleases… and we’re a stubborn bunch intent on making the most of it anyway. Pete reported a few “lively” moments getting back onto the slope that kept everyone on their toes, but also credit where it’s due, not a single model ended up in the fields below. That alone deserves a quiet round of applause.

With May now here, we’re edging towards more reliable lift and, hopefully, a bit more warmth for those standing around between flights. This is the time of year when Open Slopes really comes into its own, when you can bring just about anything along and expect to get something working.

And that’s the beauty of these days, no restrictions. Scale, F3F, F5J, foamies, DLG, PSS, sport models… if it can soar, it’s welcome. Electric setups are fine for getting you up and out of trouble, but once airborne, it’s back to proper flying, reading the air, working the lift, and making it count.

Whether you’re into chasing height, testing something new, or simply enjoying a relaxed day on the hill with plenty of banter and shared knowledge, this is one to get involved in.

So, Sunday 24th May, pack a good mix of models, bring an extra layer (just in case), and come and enjoy whatever the slope decides to give us.

Let’s see if we can top April’s turnout.

See you on the slope.

Scale Day now – Sunday 31st May 2026 –

With the original date now blown away faster than a foamie in a crosswind, we now turn our attention to the reserve date – Sunday 31st May.

So once again we shall peer nervously at weather apps, pretend we understand wind forecasts, and quietly hope the weather gods have finally had enough entertainment for one season.

Hopefully the conditions behave themselves this time and we can enjoy a proper day of model flying, good company, tea drinking, friendly banter and at least one arrival described afterwards as ‘better than it looked.’

We look forward to seeing as many members as possible at the field.

As is tradition, please keep in mind that the event may instead run on Saturday 30th May should Nick decide that Saturday offers the better conditions for scale model flying.
