November at White Sheet – What’s Coming Up?

November may be bringing the year towards a close, but there is still plenty happening at White Sheet. We have Open Slopes, one final official Scale meeting (weather permitting), and, of course, our Annual General Meeting.

So, before the winter workshops take over completely, let’s see what’s on the calendar!

Scale Day – Sunday 1 November – CANCELLED

Unfortunately, it’s bad news from the weather front. No Scale flying this weekend!

Nick has done his best, but on this occasion the weather gods have clearly decided otherwise. A prevailing Easterly wind and an unpromising forecast have forced him to postpone the meeting.

But don’t pack those Scale models away just yet!

Our attention now turns to the reserve date of Sunday 22 November. Provided the weather plays ball, this will be our final official organised Scale meeting of 2026, so let’s make it a good one!

That gives us what’s left of October and 21 days of November to get those Scale ships shipshape and Bristol fashion. Plenty of time to tackle those outstanding jobs, finish that glider that’s been occupying valuable workbench real estate all year, or give those 2026 battle scars a little TLC!

So, let’s get as many Scale ships as possible ready and onto the flightline on 22 November. Whether pristine, battle-worn or somewhere in between, all are welcome. It’s about enjoying some good flying, good company and giving the WSRFC Scale season a proper send-off, alongside Super Scale Secretary Nick and your fellow White Sheet members.

Let’s hope November has one last flying treat in store for us!

A little more about Scale Days…

Whether you’re bringing along a beautifully detailed scale model or simply coming to enjoy the flying and good company, Scale Days are always a popular feature of the club’s flying calendar. They’re an excellent opportunity to admire the craftsmanship of fellow members, exchange ideas and spend a relaxed day in the Wiltshire countryside.

You don’t need to own a scale model to join in. Everyone is welcome to come along, enjoy the atmosphere, chat with fellow members and see some of the beautiful aircraft that make these days so special.

One of the great pleasures of scale gliding is watching these beautifully crafted models in flight. From a distance, they can often be mistaken for their full-size counterparts, gracefully cruising the lift, searching for the next thermal or carving elegant aerobatic manoeuvres through the sky. With several scale gliders sharing the sky, it’s sometimes easy to forget you’re watching models at all!

While many scale gliders are capable of impressive performance, they’re often at their very best when flown in a smooth, realistic manner that reflects the aircraft they represent. It’s this combination of craftsmanship, flying skill and realism that makes Scale Day such a pleasure for pilots and spectators alike.

And, of course, there’s more to a Scale Day than flying. White Sheet offers some of the finest slope-soaring scenery around, with magnificent views across the surrounding countryside. Whether you’re standing on the edge of the slope watching graceful gliders ride the lift, or simply sitting back with a mug of tea and your lunch while enjoying the banter, there’s something rather special about a day on the hill.

As is tradition, Scale Day is reserved specifically for scale glider flying, allowing everyone to enjoy the unique character of the event and appreciate these beautifully crafted aircraft together.

A note about the weather: The reserve meeting is scheduled for Sunday 22 November, but the event may instead take place on Saturday 21 November if conditions are expected to be more favourable. Nick will make that decision on or before the preceding Friday wherever possible. The final on/off decision will normally be announced on Friday afternoon or evening, although occasionally it may not be confirmed until Saturday if the weather remains uncertain.

Open Slopes – Sunday 15 November

There’s still plenty of flying to look forward to, with our next Open Slopes meeting scheduled for Sunday 15 November.

Whether you’re a regular slope flyer or have been thinking about giving it a go, Open Slopes is a great opportunity to enjoy a relaxed day’s flying with fellow members. Bring along your favourite glider, scale soarer or any model designed to soar, and enjoy the variety of aircraft and friendly company that always makes these events worthwhile.

If you’re new to RC gliding, why not bring along your new aircraft? Open Slopes is an ideal place to learn,  with plenty of experienced pilots on hand who are always happy to offer setup and other advice, guidance and encouragement.

As always, let’s make safety part of a great day’s flying. Before heading to the slope, give your model a thorough pre-flight check, confirm your transmitter is set to the correct model, and make sure all control surfaces are moving in the correct direction and with the correct throws.

Then add one final “Pete Safety Cushion” – ask a fellow member to cast a fresh pair of eyes over your model before its first flight of the day. It’s a simple habit that can prevent an avoidable mishap, protect your model and help keep everyone safe. There will always be someone happy to help.

With the checks complete, get those chargers connected, pack your lunch and enjoy a great day’s flying!

Scale models are, as always, very welcome at Open Slopes, alongside anything else designed to soar.

In the meantime, let’s give our Operationally Optimistic Open Slopes Secretary all the support he can get in his ongoing negotiations with the weather deities.

Should he ask you to perform an unusual task, make an unexpected offering or perhaps sacrifice something you’ve been meaning to get rid of in the workshop, don’t question it… just play along!

These are the lengths we must sometimes go to appease the weather gods and secure the fabulous slope conditions we all deserve.

After all, a little superstition is a small price to pay for a day of sunshine, a decent breeze and some cracking slope soaring!

WSRFC 2026 Annual General Meeting – Saturday 28 November

The White Sheet Radio Flying Club 2026 Annual General Meeting will take place on Saturday 28 November 2026 at:

We’ll be gathering from 14:00, with the meeting commencing at 14:30. We anticipate concluding at approximately 16:30.

The AGM is an important opportunity for members to hear about the club’s activities, review the past year and take part in discussions about the club’s future.

We look forward to seeing as many members as possible there.
